Description
This phenomenon is called a 22° halo, and sometimes a moonbow. It's when moonlight refracts off ice crystals in the cirrus clouds in the sky and creates a "rainbow" halo around the moon. It's got all the colors of a regular rainbow, just too dim to distinguish. Managed to snap this with my new camera on the night time setting. Nothing super fancy, but I'm just happy it came out at all. And look, you can see Orion's Belt on the left, and Betelgeuse, and I'm fairly sure that's Jupiter on the right. Nice preparation for the lunar eclipse due to start in about three hours.
